Toxicity / Ecotoxicity – Introduction
The tools in this section provide an overview of the main outcomes from the toxicity and ecotoxicity tests conducted within the SPRINT project. They allow users to explore and compare toxicity and ecotoxicity results, understand methodological approaches, and assess how mixtures of concern may impact both human (toxicity) and environmental (ecotoxicity) health.
In Toxicity results, the findings on the effects of pesticide and their mixtures at doses that are considered safe are presented. Starting from previous biomonitoring, and following a scientific process through three consecutive phases (Tiers), the top pesticides of concern were selected and tested till the final phase of the tiered approach. Single pesticides and their mixtures were tested in silico, in vitro, and in vivo, and the results are presented separately for these Tiers, indicating where significant toxic effects were observed. These findings support the effectiveness of a component-based approach for assessing the risks of pesticide mixtures.
In Ecotoxicity results, the findings from laboratory-based ecotoxicity assessments are presented, focusing on the effects of pesticide mixtures on non-target organisms from terrestrial (soil) and aquatic (water) compartments. In the introduction, the approach for mixture testing and mixture selection is described, while the methodology section shows the procedure followed for the different species tested. The results are presented in graphical form, separated by species, indicating where significant toxic effects were observed.
